Lebanese - Syrian move to revitalize European role in the peace process
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 4/5/2000

Faez El-Saegh, the Syrian informational official, revealed that Syrian and Lebanese leaders decided during talks held recently in Damascus and Beirut to move toward the European states to urge Israel that its withdrawal should be paving the way for the peace and not "planting mines," whether by keeping some land or making Europe the defending power for Israel's troops, security and stability.

Syrian and Lebanese sources asserted following the talks between Lebanese Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Selim al-Hoss the Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara that there is a Lebanese - Syrian understanding on refusing any idea to replace multinational troops with international emergency troops and that Damascus and Lebanon would like to make the views known to the U.N. to avoid any trap into which Israeli seeks to drag Lebanon to bring about security arrangements or bilateral negotiations.
