El-Bashir meets with Merghani in Cairo
Sudan, Politics, 4/5/2000

Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir met yesterday with Ahmed El-Merghani, the former chairman of the Sudanese State Council, in the headquarters of the Sudanese embassy in Cairo at Merghani's request.

Following their long meeting, El-Bashir asserted that Merghani is completely convinced that the atmosphere in Sudan is prepared for practicing the solution of reconciliation and that there is no need for weapons.

El-Bashir said the meeting tackled the issues of reaching peace and rapport in Sudan and the situation in the eastern area of Sudan, especially in Hamshkorib. He said Merghani informed him of opposition and denunciation to any military work and his commitment to a peaceful solution, urging the opposition to stop the military work and to resort to the peaceful choice.

On his side, Ahmed Merghani depicted the meeting as good and fruitful, during which they agreed on some issues while others were delayed to another meeting. He said, "We also agreed on the reunion as well as to stop fighting."
