Moroccan Human Rights Organization stresses independence
Morocco, Politics, 4/5/2000

The Moroccan Human Rights Organization (OMDH) has renewed "its total independence" vis-a-vis the state and vis-a-vis political, economic and social actors.

The chairman of the organization, Abdallah Oualladi, who was presenting to the media Tuesday the general statement adopted by the OMDH 4th congress held end of March said the organization is committed to contribute to the amendment process of the constitution to consolidate its democratic character.

After he surveyed the topics debated by the congress --strategic orientations, proposals to reform the organization structures and working methods-- the OMDH chairman said the organization that was set up 11 years ago has and is still basing its work on the values of dignity, freedom, equality, and justice as consecrated by Islam and on the basis of the international human rights charter and conventions.

The OMDH action is conducted in the frame of the constitution and the defense of fundamental rights and freedoms, he said.

He added that the 4th congress renewed the organization's principles that reject all forms of xenophobia, intolerance and human rights violations and that uphold dialogue with all institutions, administrations and sides concerned by human rights.

OMDH's outgoing chairman, Abdelaziz Bennani, renewed the total independence of the organization even though, he said, some of its founder members are political parties militants.
