Report: President Mubarak to bridge the gap between Syrian, Israeli stances
Syria-Israel, Politics, 4/4/2000

The Chinese news agency Xinhua quoted Syrian diplomatic sources as saying on Sunday that the chance to achieve peace between Syria and Israel still exists at the time when President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak of Egypt will try to bridge the gap between the two countries.

These sources asserted that Mubarak will visit Syria to convene a meeting with Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, immediately after his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

The sources stated that the US will help Mubarak's mediation between Syria and Israel.

The same sources indicated that US President Bill Clinton asked President al-Assad, during their Geneva summit, to show new proposals in the coming weeks in order to break the common stalemate, and President al-Assad will make the door open before reviving talks on the Syrian talks in collaboration with Arab and European mediators.
