Arab protest over Annan's nuclear weapons report omitting Israel
Regional, Politics, 4/3/2000

The Arab states group at the UN has protested against the report made by the secretary general of the Arab League on the countries which signed the NPT.

The protest was made because the name of Israel was not mentioned in the report which is supposed to be submitted by Annan before convening the conference dedicated to reviewing the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) regarding nuclear weapons to be held in New York on April 24 until May 19.

The delegation-- which includes Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Algeria, Egypt and Jordan-- submitted a message in the name of the group, stressing that all Arab states signed the NPT in 1995 while Israel did not sign it. Media sources in New York said that Annan did not mention Israel by its name, though it did not sign the NPT among the UN 186 member states.
