Arab economists call for Arab economic summit
Regional, Economics, 3/30/2000
Arab economists have called the Arab League to convene an economic summit to debate the latest developments of world and regional economy and their incidence on Arab economic security.
The call is part of the recommendations made by the 13th conference of the Arab Economists Union that wound up its three-day proceedings in El Jadida Wednesday.
Participants recommended that the union and other Arab economic associations be involved in economic decision-making and pleaded for materializing Arab economic complementarity to face up the deep changes taking place worldwide.
They recommended in this respect the setting up of a body that will follow up all decisions related to economic complementarity.
They likewise called for enhancing inter-Arab exchanges and consolidating the negotiation capacity of Arab countries in dealings with big economic groupings.
Participants urged Arab states to encourage scientific and technological research and to back the efforts made by the Palestinian national authority, mainly through channeling Arab investments to Palestine and upgrading Arab-Palestinian exchanges.
