New humanitarian coordinator for Iraq appointed
Iraq-UN, Politics, 3/30/2000
Tun Myat of Myanmar was appointed by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan as the UN's humanitarian coordinator in Iraq. Myat replaces Hans Von Sponeck of Germany whose resignation is effective on March 31. Von Sponeck was critical of the humanitarian impact of economic sanctions on Iraq, as was his predecessor, Dennis Halliday.
Myat currently works with the UN World Food Program.
