Syrian premier urges promotion of irrigation projects
Syria, Politics, 3/30/2000

Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro on Wednesday presided over a meeting at the ministry of irrigation. The meeting was attended by the deputy prime ministers for economic affairs and services (both are new in the government) and the minister of irrigation, Taha al-Atrash (also new), and ministry officials concerned.

The prime minister indicated the importance of responsibilities assigned by the Ministry of Irrigation to ensure the water resources needed for irrigation, and to increase the volume of irrigated areas to ensure the needs of Syria's people for foodstuffs.

The prime minister noted a need to specify the actual reasons behind the delay in completing irrigation, dam and land reclamation projects.

He asserted the need to adhere to set schedules to organize the process of investing available human, material and technical potentials in the country "in implementation of President al-Assad's directives."

Miro said that hinting at the shortcomings and bottlenecks cannot underestimate the volume of achievements made in this sector. He continued that the expansion in the irrigation sector is crystal clear in the expansion of the irrigated areas and the surplus in agricultural production and construction of dams to ensure the food requirements of the Syrian people and strengthen Syria's exports of agricultural products.
