Hain vows British backing to achieve peace in Middle East
Jordan-UK, Politics, 3/30/2000

British Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Peter Hain has stressed that Britain will spare no efforts to help sides concerned in the Middle East achieve peace.

In a statement released in London on Wednesday, Hain, currently visiting Jordan, said that Britain had played a supporting role in creating the appropriate atmosphere for bilateral talks among sides concerned in the Middle East and that there are uneasy difficulties, yet these difficulties should not be exaggerated.

He added that peace will bring stability to the peoples of the region. He stressed that Britain and its European partners will play a basic role in materializing such peace.

He reiterated his desire to visit Syria and Lebanon within the coming months.

Meanwhile, Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdeh has stressed the importance of giving the Middle East peace process a push forward on various tracks.

The Jordanian premier also stressed Jordan's unwavering position concerning the restoration of Arab rights and implementing UN Security Council resolutions for establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the region, as peace is the only strategic option for the development and progress of the region.

This was expressed during the meeting held on Wednesday in Amman between al-Rawabdeh and Hain.

The two sides discussed all matters connecting to the Middle East peace process and its reflections on the region.
