The Palestinians in Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 3/30/2000
The Iraqi weekly al-Alaam on Wednesday quoted an Iraqi official source as saying that the Palestinians who have resided in Iraq since 1948 will enjoy the right of ownership (be able to have his own property) in Baghdad.
(According to the Arab League, the Palestinians in the Arab states are not permitted more than their house. This procedure is intended to always remind the Palestinians that they have to work to return back home and to have back their property there.)
The director of the real-estate department, Zeidan Khalaf al-Taei, said the Palestinian citizens have the right to own a peace of land or a house in Baghdad if they have been living in Iraq since 1948.
Taei explained, according to the paper, that this Palestinian cannot transfer the property or register this house he owns to one of his children or inheritors.
Some 30,000 Palestinian refugees have been living in Iraq since 1948, especially in al-Baladeyat district, to the east of the capital, Baghdad.
