Al-Shara statement on Geneva summit
Syria, Politics, 3/28/2000

The Lebanese daily al-Safir said on Monday that Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara has listed the results of the Geneva summit saying: "It cannot be said that the summit has failed or has succeeded," adding that the Geneva summit is part of American efforts that will continue to achieve a just peace.

He added that if it becomes evident that these efforts will not attain the expected results, this will be because the Israeli government pursues in the peace process the concept of power, rather then the concept of logic.

Al-Shara continued, "Despite the fact we did not have previous expectations, we were surprised that the American president has not carried with him anything new from the Israeli side," rather President Clinton has come to ask Syria's help in what can back the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak which, "We think he had created and put himself in."

Al-Shara added that President al-Assad replied the American request by asserting that Syria will not give up any of its rights and is not ready today nor tomorrow to give up any of these rights and that if Israel is ready and prepared Syria did not close and will not close the door for peace.

The paper explained, according to its own sources that the US President has not given any proposals to President al-Assad, rather surprised the Syrian delegation as he proposed the well-known Israeli demands.

The al-Safir sources said that Clinton said in his talks with al-Assad hat if the peace process will not proceed now, generations might pass by before restarting, and that President al-Assad replied " that Syria can wait for generations."
