Yemeni president starts visit to Canada

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Sunday started his first official visit to Canada. The visit will last for five days.

The Yemeni president was welcomed by Canada's governor general , Adrienne Clarkson, the representative of Queen Elizabeth II, the president of the state of Canada.

AFP said the Yemeni president, who is accompanied by a large delegation including Foreign Minister Abdul Qader Bajmal will hold several meetings in Ottawa, especially with Canada's prime minister Jean Chretien and Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy.

Prior to the Yemeni president's arrival in Canada, a Yemeni official source said that President Saleh will discuss with Chretien means of developing relations in the area of oil and gas, establishing joint venture projects and encouraging Canadian investments in the free zone in Aden in the southern part of the country.

After Ottawa, the Yemeni president will visit Montreal and Calgary, Alberta, where he will take part in the meetings organized by the Canadian- Arab trade council, according to a Canadian official statement.

In Calgary, the capital of oil industry in Canada, the Yemeni president will also meet with representatives for the Canadian Petroleum Occidental company which ensures half of the oil production in Yemen.

In conclusion of his visit to Canada, the Yemeni president will head for the US and then to Italy and the Vatican.
