Muscat: Clinton to discuss with Qaboos ME process
Oman-USA, Politics, 3/24/2000

The Oman News Agency said on Wednesday that US President Bill Clinton will stop in Oman on Saturday for hours in his way to Geneva, where he will meet with Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and that the US president will hold talks in Oman with Sultan Qaboos Bin Said on the developments of the peace process in the Middle East.

The statement released by Oman's Sultan's palace said that Clinton and Qaboos will review " the good relations linking the two friendly countries and means of perpetuating bilateral cooperation between the two sides in various fields as well as reviewing several issues of concern on the regional and international levels, foremost being the Middle East peace process."

In New Delhi, the spokesman for the white house Mike Hammer said on Tuesday that Oman was chosen to provide the plane of the President with fuel because this country (Oman) has a " moderate stand concerning the peace process."

Oman has become the first Arab Gulf state which has representation in Israel as it opened a commercial office in Israel in 1996. But it froze its measures towards normalizing relations with Israel in 1997, but Israel's commercial office in Muscat is still open.
