Pope John Paul II stresses the right of Palestinians to a homeland

Pope John Paul II has stressed the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent homeland, noting the long sufferings of the Palestinian people and saying that the sufferings of the Palestinians during the past decades cannot be ignored.
In a speech he delivered in a reception at the Palestinian territories, the pope said the Vatican always admits to the right of the Palestinian people to establish a homeland and to live in peace with other peoples in this region.
He continued that the legitimate ambitions of the Palestinian people are not attainable except through a just and comprehensive peace. He called on sides concerned to be brave and flexible and to abide by requirements of justice.
In a speech he delivered at Dheisheh camp for the Palestinian refugees, to the South of Bethlehem city, the pope called on world leaders and the international community to eliminate the sufferings of the Palestinian refugees.
