Egyptian foreign ministry warns of fraud through the Internet
Egypt-Africa, Politics, 3/22/2000
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry warned of the scams through the Internet that are practiced by some African gangsters where the culprits pretend to smuggle the fortunes of rich families in areas of western African or holding illegal transactions for exporting gold.
Many schemes have been used in the past to get citizens of different countries to send money to the culprits under different "confidence schemes," where they use the post mail and phone services for communication. These same schemes have moved to the Internet now.
Ambassador Ahmed Ragheb, manager of the travel guidance department in the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, stated that these gangsters use, steal and brutally torture their victims.
He advised Egyptian businessmen to make sure of data they receive through the Internet, especially as these gangsters claim to have prosperous economic projects in Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Nigeria.
