Haaretz and Geneva summit
Syria-Israel-USA, Politics, 3/22/2000
The Israeli daily Haaretz said on Tuesday in a report from Washington that sources in the US administration expect the summit to be held between President Bill Clinton and President Hafez al-Assad in Geneva next week to result in resuming peace talks on the Syrian track a few days after convening this summit.
The sources expressed hope that the summit will result in a new round of peace talks between Syria and Israel and a peace agreement within a few weeks.
Sources close to the contacts said that US diplomacy could alleviate the gaps between Israel and Syria, gaps that had arisen since suspending the Shepherdstown talks in mid-January.
The paper added that the Americans know that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak wants to travel to Geneva, but they have doubts on the possibility of convening a tripartite summit before formulating a peace agreement project that is acceptable to the Syrian and Israeli sides.
The paper indicated that the progress attained in contacts made recently behind closed doors centered mainly on procedural matters.
The sources close to these contacts expect that the two sides could reach an agreement during a period of four to six weeks following one or two rounds of talks in Washington.
