Israeli minister and the Geneva summit
Syria-Israel, Politics, 3/22/2000
Israeli Minister of the Interior Shlomo Ben Ami said on Tuesday in a statement to Monte Carlo radio that there are no big differences between the Syrian and Israeli positions.
The radio correspondent in Tel Aviv said that it is not a secret to say that the US "mushroom" policy ( according to a statement once stated by Mrs. Albright, the US secretary of state, that the US is pursuing a mushroom policy, which signifies that the US has been mediating in dark as the mushroom grows in dark places) has ripened in its dark channels the majority of the Syrian- Israeli peace agreement's items, adding that there are still differences between the Syrian and Israeli sides over the question of normalization.
Concerning security arrangements, the correspondent said that the two sides might accept a US proposal that calls for deploying US and French troops at early warning stations during the period of withdrawal, which may take one year and not three years as the Israelis used to say.
For its part, Israeli Radio said that at the current time a tripartite meeting between President Hafez al-Assad, US President Bill Clinton and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak is not expected, adding that a meeting as such will be held when an agreement is reached between Syria and Israel.
The radio said that the borders between Syria and Israel seem to be amended between the June 4, 1967 lines and the international borders of 1923.
