Japan to lift sanctions on Libya
Libya-Japan, Politics, 3/21/2000
Japan is projecting to lift the sanctions, imposed eight years ago, on Tripoli, deeming that Libya poses no longer a terrorist threat, an official at the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.
The Japanese official, who was quoted by Reuters, did not set a date for the lifting of sanctions, but the Japanese TV channel "NIK" said the decision may come into effect late March, MAP reported.
Japan has noticed positive signs since last April when Tripoli agreed to hand over the two Libyan nationals suspected of being involved in the 1988 attempt against a Pan Am aircraft which exploded over Lockerby, Scotland, killing 270 people.
The air and military embargo was imposed on Libya in 1992.
