Syria, Lebanon boycott water talks in the Hague
Lebanon-Syria-International, Politics, 3/21/2000
The Lebanese and Syrian delegations to the meetings of the second international forum for water currently being held in the Hague, Netherlands, have boycotted the session dedicated to discussing the issue of water on the ground of their refusal to take part in any form of "multilateral" talks.
The Lebanese National News Agency quoted Lebanese Minister of Water Resources and Electricity Suleiman Trabulsi as saying that the topic debated at the conference is not on the agenda of this conference and the Lebanese delegation has no link to it because Israel still occupies part of south Lebanon and its western Bekaa, besides the bilateral talks are not resumed.
Trabusli added that the Lebanese position is that due to the fact that the Hague declaration which will be released at the end of the international forum is a mere recommendation that is submitted by each of the participating delegations to its government to take the appropriate decision regarding it, then Lebanon will not be obliged to abide by decisions not identical with its own regulations.
