Syria-Egypt, Politics, 3/21/2000
The Kuwaiti daily al-Watan stated, according to well-informed Egyptian diplomatic sources, that Egyptian-Syrian contacts are underway between Cairo and Damascus to agree on the arrangements for the urgent summit to be held within the coming days in Cairo between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Syrian President Hafez al-Assad in order to discuss several developments pertaining to the Middle East peace process, formulate new moves on reviving negotiations on the Syrian track and revitalize the Egyptian contacts with the US administration in light of the forthcoming visit to be held by Mubarak to the USA.
In its Monday issue, the Kuwaiti daily added that the agreement to convene the summit was reached during the telephone call between President Mubarak and President al-Assad at the end of last week.
The agreement called for conveying a message from President al-Assad to US President Bill Clinton concerning the unwavering positions of the Syrian side and its developments concerning current moves pertaining to the peace process.
