Sudanese opposition parties downplay new parties law
Sudan, Politics, 3/16/2000
Representatives of the Sudanese opposition parties downplayed the new parties law, which allowed political parties freedom of work in the political arena without having to register with the government, called for in a recently adopted law.
A statement issued by the Democratic Unionist Party said the Khartoum government used to be the only one to carry out draft resolutions and to decide on them unilaterally, saying that the opposition is waiting for more daring steps to reach solutions to the Sudanese problem.
A statement by the Ummah Party said the law does not include anything new but changes the name of the law and recognizes the parties existing before the agreement, adding that rest of the law comprises the same items stated in the former law.
