On the new Syrian government
Syria, Politics, 3/16/2000

The Lebanese paper al-Mustaqbal said on Wednesday that political sources indicated that the governmental reshuffle in Syria aims basically at dealing with internal issues pertaining to the economy and the administration.

The sources indicated that the formation of the new government, whose many members were nominated by Col. Bashar al-Assad, is a new step towards his involvement in local matters and implementing his ambitious program to modernize the Syrian economy, disseminate technology and informatics and fight corruption.

In the same context the Lebanese "al-Kifah al-Arabi" weekly quoted Syrian sources as saying that the interest of the new Syrian government will concentrate on "living " conditions and modernizing the state in the framework of the directives from Bashar, who is attracting youth inside the Syrian society.

In Riyadh, the Saudi daily Okaz said the new Syrian government wants to confirm the real desire to "formulate a new phase and a new language in line with the needs of the age and the third millennium and in search of a better prospect for a future Syria which will be more stable and secure in its inclination towards peace."

Meanwhile, the London-based al-Hayat daily said under the title "The new Syrian government: a formation of technocrats including two women," the paper said that several analysts consider that the formation of the new government as reflecting the desire to make a change within "continuity" and a clear inclination to rely on the two elements of "youth and efficiency."

In Kuwait, the Kuwaiti daily al-Seyassa expressed its optimism over the new Syrian government's ability to maintain a change in various levels. In an article the Kuwaiti daily said that such optimism has not come from names of the new ministers but as a result of the feeling of having a change, which has been a necessary demand required by the Syrian people, especially in regard to the internal situation.

The article asserted: "The volume of the change is meeting the Syrian internal needs in aspects touching the conscience of the Syrian people in the economic, administrative, services and education areas. This is, however, the first step in the right path pursued by the Syrian leadership."
