On the release of Jordanian detainees
Jordan-Syria, Politics, 3/16/2000
The Jordanian daily al-Dostour said on Wednesday that Syrian diplomatic sources did not confirm or deny news reports which said that the Syrian government has released some 17 Jordanian detainees held in the Syrian jails on Saturday.
The Jordanian paper added that the Syrian committee for human rights on Tuesday welcomed Damascus's release of 17 Jordanian detainees who had been held for many years in Syrian jails and called for the release of all political detainees.
The paper quoted the committee as saying that it had released those detainees who used to be held at Palmyra's prison, adding that the release of the prisoners came in the context of improving relations between Syria and Amman.
The paper remarked that the committee made it clear in its statement that it had contacted one of the released prisoners who arrived in Amman on Monday but abstained from giving his name.
