Banning man from having more than one wife in Morocco
Morocco, Culture, 3/15/2000

A Moroccan governmental committee is due to discuss in the coming week a new law that would ban a man from having more than one wife. The issue is to be raised to king Mohammed 6th and it comprises giving the women a greater right in getting a divorce as well as increasing the marriage age among girls to 18 years.

The draft law has brought about strong debate among the political factions as conservative forces refuse this law and argue that the proposals to change some legal provisions do not conform to Islam while parties of the socialist and progressive union, the socialist movement as well as the independence party (represents the ruling coalition) - support this law.

It is known that Tunis has banned the practive of having more than one wife since year 1987 and it also gives equal rights between boys and girls in inheritance.
