Moroccan parliament studies compulsory education program
Morocco, Education, 3/15/2000

The Social and Islamic Affairs Committee at the Moroccan chamber of representatives (lower house of parliament) has studied a program on compulsory education in Morocco.

The government has pledged to generalize schooling among children aged between 6 and 15 as of this year, head of the committee, Mohamed Moubdi told the press.

The committee requested the National Education Department to take the necessary measures to enroll these children, whose number stands at 2 million.

Moroccan Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi had insisted before the parliament that education is a basic right that should be guaranteed in accordance with the teachings of Islam and U.N. conventions.

He also said when presenting to the parliament the national education and training charter that the government will increase the education budget by 5% that currently absorbs 25% of the overall state budget.
