Israel responds to Arab FM conference by bombarding the borders with Syria
Regional-Israel, Military, 3/14/2000
Israel was not late in responding to the statement of the Arab foreign ministers who met in Beirut in solidarity with Lebanon in confrontation with its aggressions. This response came from multiple objectives and bears in itself many messages.
This Israeli reaction first targeted Syria through Israel's bombardment of Yanta, which is closely adjoining the Lebanese- Syrian borders and Qusaya in the eastern Bekaa.
This Israeli reaction also targeted Lebanese President Emile Lahoud through striking an army barrier al al-Mansouri as well as bases for the Palestinians who stand against the leadership of Yasser Arafat.
And this was in light of the warning made by Lahoud last week in that Lebanon will not ensure security guarantees to Israel unless the question of the Palestinian refugees is settled, noting the possibility of having a Palestinian resistance through the borders between Lebanon and Israel.
The Israeli attacks also targeted in the third place after Syria and the Lebanese president, the Lebanese resistance after the statement released by the Arab League council backed Lebanon's right to resist the occupation, and the resistance was commended by many Arab foreign ministers.
All these came in a long day of Israeli messages, which witnessed an escalation which is the fiercest since the Israeli air strikes against the electricity relay station in Lebanon on February 8. The total air messages sent by Israel were 18 on Monday distributed on two bases for "Fatah- the Uprising and the People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command, near the Lebanese- Syrian borders and Lebanese resistance targets near al-Nabatieh and in the central sector.
The raids were coupled with a violent artillery bombardment which targeted an army barrier in al-Mansouri where one Lebanese soldier and one civilian were killed and three citizens were wounded.
