State of emergency extended in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 3/14/2000
The extension of a state of emergency was announced in Khartoum as from Sunday evening until the end of this year.
In a statement made on Monday, the Sudanese government said that the reasons for establishing the state of emergency are still valid.
The state of emergency grants the government wide powers in the area of detentions and intervention during demonstrations and freezes some items of the constitution.
Meanwhile, the first vice president in Sudan, Ali Othman Muhammad, said that the issue of elections for a new legislative council is still being debated after the government has announced a new law to organize the parties and that talks about setting up a certain legislative council are linked to the results of consultations among opposition sides.
On the other hand, news reports from Asmara said the meeting held by the Sudanese opposition on Saturday witnessed separatist positions. The reports added that while leader of the rebellion in southern Sudan, John Garang, believes that a peaceful solution in Sudan comes only through the IGAD (Inter-Governmental Authority on Development) initiative, former Sudanese Premier al-Sadeq al-Mahdi finds the Egyptian- Libyan initiative as the only initiative which is applicable for attaining peace, besides taking IGAD's initiative into account.
