New government formed in Syria

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Monday evening issued decree no. 8 on the formation of the new Cabinet as the following:

Muhammad Mustafa Miro, the prime minister;
Lt. Gen. Mustafa Tlass, the deputy premier and defense minister;
Naji al-Otari, the deputy premier for services;
Khaled Raad, the deputy premier for economic affairs;
Farouk al-Shara the foreign minister;
Muhammad al-Imadi, the minister of the economy and foreign trade;
Muhammad Mahayni, the minister of finance;
Muhammad Eyad al-Shatti, the minister of health;
Asaad Mustafa, the minister of agriculture and agrarian reform;
Radwan Marteini, the minister of communications; Hussam al-Safadi, the minister of housing and utilities;
Munib Saem al-Daher, the minister of electricity;
Muhammad Abdul Raouf Zeyadah, minister of al-Awqaf;
Muhammad Maher Jamal, minister of oil;
Salam Yassin, minister of local administration;
Adnan Omran, minister of information;
Haitham Dweihi, the minister for presidential affairs;
Nihad Mushantat, minister of construction and building up;
Maha Qanout, minister of culture;
Hassan al-Nouri, minister of state, Qasem Miqdad, minister of tourism;
Muhammad al-Sayed, minister of education;
Farouk al-Adli, state minister for environment;
Nabil al-Khatib, minister of justice.

The appointments als included Hassan Risha as minister of higher education, Mukarram Obeid as minister of transportation, Muhammad Seifi as minister of state for Cabinet affairs, Baria al-Qudsi as minister of labor and social affairs, Osama Maa al-Barid as minister of supply and internal trade, Ihsan Shariteh as state minister, Ahmad Hamo as minister of industry, Taha al-Attrash as minister of irrigation, and Makhlouf Abu Hamdah as minister of state.

The new Cabinet has 35 ministers including, three deputies to the prime minister. Some 22 ministers assume their posts for the first time, while 13 other ministers kept their posts including Defense Minister Lt. Gen Tlass, Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, Minister of the Interior Muhammad Harba, Minister of the Economy and Foreign Trade Muhammad al-Imadi and Finance Minister Khaled al-Maheyni.

Among the new faces are Information Minister Adnan Omran, Maha Qanout for the Ministry of Culture, Qasem Miqdad for the Ministry of Tourism, Mahmoud al-Sayed for the Ministry of Education, Nabil al-Khatib for the Ministry of Justice and Makram Obeid for the Ministry of Transport.
