A delegation of Italian officials will shortly pay a visit to Morocco on the eve of the coming into force of the new Italian law on immigration.
Under the new law, Italy will open gates to 63,000 legal emigrants in the course of year 2000.
Italian undersecretary of the interior, Alberto Maritali, announced in Rome Wednesday that a delegation will go to countries with which Italy has already set a quota of immigrants, such as Morocco, Tunisia and Albania.
In this respect, he said, 3,000 immigrants will come from Morocco, the same number from Tunisia and 6,000 from Albania.
The delegation to include ministers of the interior, of labor and of foreign affairs might also visit Rumania.
The three ministerial departments will also hold a round table to debate means of enforcing the new immigration law in a correct and beneficial way, the Italian official said.
Under the new law, he stated further, immigrants will be considered as full-fledged citizens, enjoying rights and fulfilling duties. They will be secured access to school, medicare and lodging, he said.
Morocco and Italy are bound by an agreement on struggle against illegal immigration under which they cooperate in the identification of the Moroccan nationals who enter Italy illegally and in their repatriation.
According to latest available figures, the Moroccan community settled in Italy is 146,460 strong.
