Morocco, Jordan voice full backing to Palestinians, Syria, Lebanon and lifting Iraq sanctions
Morocco-Jordan, Politics, 3/10/2000

Morocco and Jordan on Thursday voiced full backing to the Palestinian people to recover their rights, including the establishment of an independent state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

A joint communique, made public at the end of talks between King Mohammed VI and King Abdullah II, renewed attachment to a peaceful settlement in the Middle-East in accordance with the international legality.

King Abdullah started Thursday a three-day official visit to Morocco at the invitation of King Mohammed VI.

The two kings voiced concern over the obstacles that hampered the Middle East peace process in the past months and urged Israel to abide by accords concluded with the Palestinian side.

They rejected the Israeli settlement policy in the occupied Palestinian territories and all Israeli attempts to Judaize Al-Quds Asharif. These practices and measures do not serve peace to which all the peoples of the region aspire.

King Mohammed VI is chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, an off-cut of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, striving for the preservation of the holy city against Israeli Judaization schemes.

Morocco and Jordan also renewed backing to Syria and Lebanon in their struggle to recover their occupied territories in accordance with the international legality.

King Mohammed VI and King Abdullah voiced concern over the Israeli aggressions against Lebanon, which targeted unarmed civilians and economic infrastructure.

The two kings voiced solidarity with Lebanon and urged the international community to intervene to prevent the recurrence of such aggression.

The joint communique added that the two leaders voiced concern over the dismal conditions of the Iraqi people. They renewed the call on the international community to lift the embargo to help the Iraqi people live in dignity.

The UN-decreed sanctions against Iraq have caused a serious crisis in the Arab nation, especially among children. One Iraqi child dies every six minutes, i.e. 200 children per day and 7,000 per month, because of the embargo.

King Mohammed VI and King Abdullah also affirmed Rabat and Amman's constant position to preserve Iraq's independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

The two leaders also voiced determination to work for reunification of Arab ranks, promote inter-Arab relations and consolidate Arab joint action.
