Algerian, Sudanese presidents agree to large scale cooperation
Algeria-Sudan, Politics, 3/10/2000

Algeria and Sudan on Wednesday ended the diplomatic crisis which characterized relations between the two states since the halt of the election process in Algiers in 1992 with an announcement made by officials in the two states that they put an end to settling suspended issues that prevented restoring relations to normalcy.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir said the aim of the visit he held to Algeria is to make a qualitative change in the field of bilateral cooperation through best investment of joint expertise and varied material available in our two countries."

He stated that contacts between the officials in the two states have continued since the recent African summit held in Algeria through telephone contacts or delegates.

Economic and trade relations between the two states are witnessing rising surge, thanks to cooperation mechanism in the areas of energy, trade and farming.

The Algerian fuel company Sonatrach has recently signed two contracts with Sudan to explore and invest fuels.

On the security side, all issues were settled four years ago during the summit which brought together former Algerian President Liamine Zeroual and his Sudanese counterpart in Libya, a summit which had drawn up diplomatic and security mechanisms to monitor all members suspected of being involved with the Algerian armed groups who arrive into Sudan or live in it.

Relations had worsened between the two states in 1992 after Algeria had accused Khartoum of permitting members of the Algerian armed groups to benefit from the people's military training camp in Sudan.
