Morocco briefs Arab labor meeting on government's youth employment policy
Regional-Morocco, Economics, 3/9/2000

Morocco is considering youth employment as one of the top priorities of the government policy and, to this end, has adopted a legal and institutional arsenal to upgrade the competitiveness of Moroccan enterprises.

Talking at the Arab labor conference, currently taking place in the Egyptian red sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, head of the employment department at the ministry of social development, solidarity, employment and vocational training, said Morocco has raised national investment average from 4% in 93-97 to 15% in 98-99. He added that the 2000-2004 five-year plan is based on job promotion in keeping with the first national employment encounter's recommendations that included the creation of a national employment agency and the enforcement of the young graduates' self-employment strategy in partnership with banks.

The Moroccan official also dwelt on Morocco's education efforts, mainly the enforcement as of the coming academic year of a new education charter, insisting that vocational training, fighting illiteracy are very important in developing human resources and training skilled labor in improving the quality and quantity of production and ensure to the youth a good integration in working life.

Morocco also hailed the report submitted by the Arab Labor Organization's chairman, Ibrahim Kouider, and that recommended the creation of data banks for employment of youth in the rural world.

He further expressed Morocco's support to enforcing complementarity between Arab states and to proposals meant to bring investments to Arab populous states. He also voiced Morocco's adherence to all initiatives meant to give priority in employment to Arab workers.

Morocco wishes to develop bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Arab countries, especially gulf countries, said Morocco's delegate before underscoring the importance of the Morocco-Gulf partnership and investment forum slated for next May in Casablanca.

Morocco is taking part in the conference with a delegation representing the government, the employers association (CGEM) and trade unions.
