Moroccan women to march for their rights
Morocco, Culture, 3/9/2000
Like other women across the world, Moroccan women will stage next Sunday a march in downtown Rabat.
The march will not be similar to the traditional protest movements, organizers said.
Several NGOs, women associations and artists will participate in the march to claim women's rights to dignity and equality.
Relatedly, scores of Moroccan jobless women staged a demonstration Wednesday in front of the parliament in Rabat to claim their right to employment.
The demonstrators, mostly holders of engineering and doctoral degrees, have been observing a sit-in for 16 months, Bouchra Cherabi, a jobless Phd holder, told MAP news agency.
"We are marking the World women day (March 8) by breaking the silence on our problems," she said, deploring the lack of an earnest dialogue with the government.
She criticized the government for failure to live up to its commitment to hire the jobless graduates in the private and public sectors.
