Garang's advisor: We demand joining the national assembly to the negotiation team
Sudan, Politics, 3/8/2000
Mansour Khaled, the political advisor for the head of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, John Garang, said he officially informed IGAD's envoy ambassador Amboya of demands to joining the opposition Democratic National Alliance coalition to the negotiation team in the government's negotiations with the SPLM.
Khaled said in an interview with ArabicNews.com that, "We have informed the envoy, and he has to inform the IGAD countries, Egypt and Libya, and he also has to consult with the Sudanese government concerning this."
He stated that the movement's position does not differ from the opposition coalition position toward the Egyptian - Libyan initiative, but the movement is the one that initiated and stated its position clearly toward the initiative which is coordinating between the Egyptian - Libyan and IGAD initiatives.
On the topic of aid groups and the conditions that the SPLA was requesting international help organization to abide by, Khaled said, "We do not refuse work of the international rescue organizations, and we wanted to put an end to the suspicion campaigns for that someone says that the USA is using the food subject to support the public movement and to deliver weapons to it. Yet the movement is an independent one that asked all the rescue organizations to abide by certain rules."
He added that there are 45 rescue organizations among which are 32 that signed what the SPLM requested and 13 that did not sign the terms. "We are trying to organize (their) practices inside the liberated lands, yet the strange thing is that the large organizations signed while the small ones refused, thus all we want is transparency in performance and democracy," he said, adding that all that has been said about governmental procedures for changing the laws does not achieve an adequate atmosphere to start any talks with the government and SPLM demands, "according to which we will take the proper decision."
