King Mohammed's recent visit to Spain, significant friendship gesture, Spain says
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 3/8/2000
The private visit King Mohammed VI paid recently to Spain is a significant gesture of friendship, the Spanish foreign affairs minister said Tuesday.
The royal visit is evidence to the Moroccan and Spanish kings' will and that of the two countries' governments to consolidate bilateral relations, Abel Matutes told the press in Madrid.
King Mohammed VI paid last week a short visit to Spain during which he was guest to a luncheon offered in his honor by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sophia.
Abel Matutes, who made the statement after he received the newly-appointed Moroccan ambassador to Spain, Abdeslam Barak, said bilateral relations are "very rich and deep."
Moroccan-Spanish ties were marred recently following vandalism acts perpetrated by Spanish farmers against Moroccan products transiting Spain towards European markets. Racist acts against the Moroccan community settled in the Spanish southern locality of El Egido contributed to straining these relations.
