Kidnappers of the Polish ambassador in Yemen, arrested
Yemen, Politics, 3/8/2000
A Yemeni security source said on Tuesday in Sanaa that the Yemeni authorities arrested four persons who had kidnapped the Polish ambassador, after they had confrontations with the security forces.
AFP quoted the security source as saying that the four persons who belong to al-Qeiri tribe were arrested on Monday in al-Yamanitin district, 50 km east of Sanaa, where Polish Ambassador Christoph Sobrovich was held for four days before he was released on Sunday.
The source added that the kidnappers were not intending to kidnap the Polish ambassador in person, as they had intended to kidnap any person of foreign complexion in order to pressure the government to release Sheikh Khaled al-Qeiri, who was arrested in January 29 upon his return from Jordan for security reasons.
The speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, Sheikh Abdullah al-Ahmar, who is also the chairman of the Yemeni coalition for reform, said that there are no foreign sides involved in the kidnapping operation. He said these operations are the result of internal problems in Yemen. He opposed the phenomenon of kidnapping and called on the government to intensify its efforts to halt such acts.
