Meetings of Sudanese Democratic National Alliance start
Sudan, Politics, 3/7/2000
Meetings of the general leader organization of the Sudanese opposition, the Democratic National Alliance, started in Asmara today amid a pessimistic atmosphere.
The spokesman for the coalition said that the Ummah Party chaired by al-Sadeq al-Mahdi will also take part in the meeting. The openness of the Ummah Party to the government raised controversy during the recent meeting of the opposition leaders in Kampala in December 1999. This is the first meeting for the opposition in Eritrea after Eritrea resumed its relations with Khartoum.
The spokesman said the meeting will last two or three days, and this depends on the topics to be debated. Representative of the Egyptian and Libyan governments are participating in the meetings.
The meeting is to discuss the final touches on the general conference of the assembly which means that this collective event will go on in performing its required role, even after achieving a comprehensive political solution and dedicating the national rapport.
The Sudanese opposition will evaluate the developments that took place in the Egyptian - Libyan initiative by the Egyptian - Libyan committee and the stance of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army.
