Iran invited to Arab League meeting
Regional-Iran, Politics, 3/6/2000

Iran has been invited to attend a meeting of Arab foreign ministers as observer, Iranian news agency IRNA reported on Sunday.

The invitation was extended during a phone conversation between Iranian
Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi and Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid.

The two sides discussed the latest developments in Lebanon and the upcoming league meeting, to be hosted in Beirut to show support to Lebanon against the recent Israeli attacks.

Israel launched a series of blitzes against south Lebanon to quell the resistance of the Pro-Iran Hizbullah troops.

Kharrazi welcomed the Arab league invitation and hoped the Beirut meeting will "help consolidate the solidarity and positive atmosphere of support for the people and government of Lebanon."

Iran, acting chairman of the Organization of Islamic Conference, had requested on Saturday to participate in the Arab League meeting as observer.
