UN official says sexual exploitation of Moroccan children not very serious
Morocco-UN, Politics, 3/6/2000
UN special rapporteur for children trafficking, prostitution and pornography, Ofelia Calcetas-Santos, who paid last week a visit to Morocco, said the situation of sexual exploitation of children in Morocco is not very serious.
She said the situation can be addressed by prevention, noting that the rising awareness of the phenomenon is a very important step in dealing with the issue.
The UN official, whose mission was meant to make to Moroccan officials recommendations on measures to protect children, added that Moroccan children are facing sexual exploitation in large cities, due to social changes, illiteracy, the collapse of traditional family values and legislative reasons.
She also stressed the role of the media, justice and education in protecting children.
