Islamic countries condemn Israel's aggressions on Lebanon
Regional-UN, Politics, 3/4/2000
Islamic countries at the United Nations on Friday condemned Israel's acts of aggression against Lebanese territories a month ago.
The Islamic group adopted a statement urging the UN and other international organizations "to intensify efforts to compel it (Israel) to put an end to its acts of aggression against civilians, civilian installations and other vital economic utilities."
The statement demanded that the Jewish state end its occupation of Lebanese territories in accordance with resolution 425 (of 1978) and to make reparation to Lebanon for the losses and damages resulting from the attacks.
The statement refers to Israeli attacks last February 8, which claimed Lebanese civilian lives and caused heavy material damage to properties and vital civilian installations, particularly electric power stations.
The group comprises 45 member states and five members with observer status.
"While condemning these repeated acts of aggression against the Lebanese territories, the Islamic group reiterates its solidarity with the government and the people of Lebanon in their struggle for the liberation of the occupied parts of southern Lebanon and the western Bekaa, the statement said.
It "reaffirms Lebanon's right to resist the occupation in accordance with United Nations resolutions and international law and norms."
The Islamic Group further reiterates that these acts of aggression clearly show Israel's intentions to abort the peace process on all tracks, and its lack of desire the achieve just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region, the statement said.
