Algeria backs Moroccan's candidacy to second term as African Development Bank chief
Algeria-Morocco-International, Politics, 3/3/2000
Algeria has renewed backing to the candidacy of Moroccan Omar Kabbaj to a second term at the head of the African Development Bank (ADB), it was officially announced in Algiers Thursday.
Kabbaj-- chairing the African financial institution since 1995-- has successfully fulfilled his mission and has always had brotherly relations with Algeria, reported the Algerian news agency APS quoting an official source.
Algeria's vote will go to Kabbaj, the source said.
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika had already voiced his country's backing for Kabbaj at a meeting in Algiers last summer on the fringes of the African summit, APS said, adding that Algeria's stand, adopted in consultation with the heads of state of Gabon, Haj Omar Bongo, and of Senegal, Abdou Diouf, remains unchanged.
A royal envoy paid a short visit to Algiers Thursday and conveyed a message from King Mohammed VI to president Bouteflika. The Abidjan-based ADB which has initiated its restructuring few years ago has supplied during the past two years loans to 50 African states, worth $1.8 billion per year. The African financial institution is now orienting its actions towards struggle against poverty, sustained development and promoting the private sector.
