Lebanon will not hand over members of the Japanese Red Army to Tokyo
Lebanon-Japan, Politics, 3/2/2000

The Lebanese Cabinet ratified the judicial report which recommended not handing over five Japanese members of the Japanese Red Army.

The five members are accused of forging passports and travel papers.

Japan has previously presented many demands to receive the five Japanese members to try them, but Lebanese law prevents handing over persons for political purposes and public pressures.

The Lebanese government now has two choices, either to expatriate the Japanese members to outside Lebanon, which has specific legal procedures, or to grant them the right of asylum.

The five Japanese Red Army members will be finishing on March 28 a three-year prison sentence after being arrested and tried for forgery.
