Environmental groups organize demonstration against first nuclear electricity station in Turkey
Turkey, Local, 3/1/2000

Hundreds of members of environmental groups in Turkey organized a demonstration in the largest square in Istanbul yesterday to urge the government not to go on with its project to establish the first nuclear reactor for producing electrical power in Turkey.

The Turkish security forces arrested nearly 50 of the participants in the illegal demonstration who refused to be dispersed.

The environmental group organized this protest demonstration when Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Cumhur Ersumer said his country's government would declare today the name of the company that will be authorized to implement this nuclear station, which will be the first of its sort in Turkey and will established in the Ak Koyo area in Mardin governorate near the Syrian border.
