Arab states against the erection of Turkish dam on the Tigris
Regional-Turkey, Politics, 3/1/2000
The Turkish daily "Radical" said on Tuesday that Syria, backed by Jordan and Iraq is making efforts to prevent the construction of Aleso dam which Turkey is planning to build on the Tigris river in the southeastern part of Turkey.
The paper said that the Turkish government and the project of East Anadolia (al-Ghab) are trying to convince the world that this dam will make a change in the social and economic structure of the region and solve the problem of power shortages in Turkey, in answer to the strong opposition to this project.
This paper reported that the Turkish officials see the internal opposition to the project as part of the propaganda issued by the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK).
