Syria doesn't oppose Israel's pullout from Lebanon, Hizbollah not terrorist
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 2/29/2000

Presidential Political Advisor Osama Al Baz left Cairo late Monday for Israel as part of Egypt's constant attempts to push forward the Middle East peace process.

In statements before departure, Baz said that he will meet with Israeli Premier Ehud Barak and other Israeli senior officials. He voiced Egypt's hope that the process would lead to a just and comprehensive peace.

Baz said Israel knows quite well that unless a just and comprehensive peace is achieved, the Israeli people can never enjoy peace. "The peace process has not stopped but there is no progress," he said.

Baz hoped that Israel would pull back from south Lebanon "without taking any unjustified measures." Israel has been clinging to a self-styled security zone in south Lebanon since 1985.

"Syria does not oppose Israeli pullout from south Lebanon in accordance with United Nations (UN) resolution 425," Baz said, adding Israel should know that it can never drive a wedge between the Syrian and Lebanese peoples as their interests are one and the same.

"There is no change in the French stand, French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin's recent statements mirrored what he heard from the Israelis," said Baz. He pointed out that Hizbollah cannot be described as a terrorist organization and what it is doing at least at present falls within legitimate resistance.
