Some 20 persons killed in Algeria
Algeria, Politics, 2/29/2000

The Algerian security forces said on Monday that some 20 persons were killed on Sunday evening in El Bayadh province, 400 km southwest of the capital, Algiers. But did not specify whether the victims were killed by an aggression carried out by "terrorists" and confined to saying that the "victims are farmers who were killed in a region known as al-Harif Um al-Ashyam in the upper heights."

The Algerian security sources added that the "security forces started immediately a search operation to find the executors of this brutal act."

This is the first aggression announced by an official source in several weeks, while the Algerian private press speak daily of aggressions and massacres attributed to armed Islamists who oppose the civil concord law.

Since last Thursday at least some 20 persons were killed in Algeria in different aggressions, according to the Algerian press.
