Jordanian minister denies smuggling of commodities into Jordan from neighboring states
Jordan, Economics, 2/29/2000
Jordanian Minister of Finance Michel Marto has denied that he accused the Jordanian Parliament of having a lobby protecting smugglers who smuggle commodities to Jordan from neighboring countries.
In a statement to the Jordanian daily al-Dustour on Monday the Jordanian minister stressed that Jordanian producers and industrialists had repeatedly complained of smuggling and flooding the market with smuggled foodstuffs from neighboring states.
On Sunday news reports quoted Marto as saying there is a parliamentary lobby which protects the smugglers who work in the border areas. This claimed report provoked vast parliamentary reactions on Sunday morning.
