Syrian- Saudi minutes of meetings signed

Meetings of the Syrian-Saudi joint committee were concluded in al-Riyadh on Sunday evening and minutes of meetings of the 8th session of the joint committee were signed at the premises of the Saudi foreign ministry in al-Riyadh.

On the Syrian side, the minutes of meetings were signed by the Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara and the Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal signed it on behalf of his country.

In conclusion of the joint committee meetings the following press release was issued: The two sides reviewed bilateral cooperation relations in all political, economic and cultural fields and other relevant areas and showed their satisfaction over the development of these relations.

The two sides approved the minutes of meetings in preparations for the 8th session of the joint committee which held its meetings in al-Riyadh on February 15 and 16.

On the economic field the two sides stressed the need of continued work towards increasing trade exchange and joint projects, promotion of commodity exchange and continuing activities of the joint committee as well as convening its meetings regularly.

In this respect the two sides underlined the importance of reaching a proper formula to establish the free trade area between the two sides very soon and to convene a bilateral meeting between the two sides for specialists concerned to draw the mechanism to implement the agreement provides for exempting activities and equipment of the air transport establishment from custom tax and fees.

The two sides also agreed to convene a meeting for specialists from the two sides to prepare a memorandum of understanding to organize land transport for commodities and passengers between the two countries.

The two sides also stressed the importance of continued periodical meetings for the businessmen council in the two countries for intensifying and promoting cooperation.

In the cultural area, the two sides expressed satisfaction over educational and scientific cooperation and underlined the role played by the media as an element to bring the two peoples together.

The two sides stressed intensified Arab efforts to restore all Arab lands and rights according to international legitimacy resolutions provides for Israel's unconditional withdrawal from South Lebanon and total pullout from the Golan.

The two sides condemned the Israeli settlement policy in the occupied territories and condemned the Israeli recent aggressions against Lebanon which inflicted heavy material losses and viewed these brutal Israeli aggression as a flagrant violation to April understanding.

The two sides called for making the ME East a zone free from nuclear weapons and stressed the need of subjecting the Israeli nuclear firm to international inspection.

The two sides stressed Iraq's unity and sovereignty and return back to the Arab family and the international community is a matter which they are very careful to maintain, noting that the Iraqi's government abstention from full implementation of international resolutions concerned will perpetuate the sufferings of the Iraqi people and obstruct Iraq's reunion with its Arab and regional role.

He two sides expressed their great concern over the situation in Chechnya and the sufferings and catastrophe hit the civilians there.

They urged the Russian government to reach a peaceful solution there through dialogue and negotiations and facilitation of the arrival of humanitarian aids.

The two sides agreed to hold the meeting of the 9th session of the joint committee for bilateral cooperation in Damascus in the second half of 2000.
