A department for supervising the Iraqi interests opened at the Algerian embassy in Damascus
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 2/28/2000

Iraqi diplomats reported that a branch for supervising Iraqi interests will be opened this week in Damascus for the first time since diplomatic relations were severed between the two countries in 1980.

Meanwhile, an Algerian diplomatic source expected that very soon Syrian diplomats will head to Iraq to open a branch for supervising Syrian interests at the Algerian embassy in Baghdad.

Ghazi al-Khdeir, who will preside over the Iraqi branch in Damascus, said that this branch will be inaugurated this week at a headquarters supervised by the Algerian embassy in Damascus.

Recently maintenance works started in the Iraqi embassy in Damascus closed since several years. Al-Khdeir said that the Iraqi diplomats can carry out their tasks at this embassy later on.
