Saudi Arabia-Syria, Politics, 2/28/2000

King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia on Sunday received Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara at al-Yamama presidential palace.

Al-Shara delivered President Hafez al-Assad's message to King Fahd.

On the Syrian side the meeting was attended by Minister of the Economy and Foreign Trade Muhammad al-Imadi and Minister of Finance Khaled al-Maheyni.

The Saudi side at the meeting was represented by Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, Minister of Finance and the Economy Ibrahim Assaf and the Saudi ambassador in Damascus.

King Fahd asked al-Shara to convey his greetings and good wishes to President Hafez al-Assad.

Earlier in the day, Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz met with al-Shara who handed him a message from President al-Assad.

Discussions dealt with the Israeli aggression against Lebanon and its negative consequences on the Middle East peace process.

Talks also dealt with bilateral relations between Syria and Saudi Arabia.

In this regard, the Saudi crown prince stressed his country's firm stand on backing Syria and Lebanon to restore their occupied territories and establish a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

In conclusion of the meeting, the Saudi crown prince asked al-Shara to convey his greetings and best wishes to President al-Assad.

Al-Shara arrived in Riyadh earlier in the day in an official visit to Saudi Arabia. He will head the Syrian delegation to the meetings of the Syrian-Saudi joint committee in its 8th session due to have started on Sunday.
